Tip #1: Aim for progress not perfection: The achilles heel of creative souls is perfectionism. Whether you’re trying to start a project, or finish it, let go of the need to be perfect. See your mistakes as opportunities for learning and growth and — JUST. KEEP. GOING.

Tip #2: Meditate on your core message: So you want to be a writer. What are you going to write about? Take time to introspect on who you are and your unique gifts. Be conscious about what you’re putting out into the world. If it is authentic & true to your core, then you can’t go wrong.

Tip #3: Surround yourself with other artists: A monk once told me that if you want to be a good meditator, surround yourself with other people who are meditators. The same principle, he said, applies if you want to be an artist. Find like-minded community and support.

Tip #4: Create for yourself first and foremost: Yes, you want to identify your target audience if you’re let’s say, a professional musician building a brand. But creative self-expression happens because you have a calling in your soul to make something. Also, if you don’t like it, who will?

Tip #5: Think like a playful cosmic trickster: Death to the stereotype that you need to suffer for your art. Instead, embrace author Elizabeth Gilbert’s way. A martyr would say ‘life is pain’, while a trickster would say, ‘life is interesting.’ Invoke magic and mischief into your craft.
